Mavo is a name that sparks conversation, carries respect, and invokes curiosity in the rap/hip-hop underworld. Young but experienced, Mavo has been knocking out hits and underrated gems for years, operating with a huge collective of veteran producers and freaky talented rappers. Stumbling upon Mavo in your artists is like realizing your best friend sat one seat behind you, in all your favorite classes all year before you knew them.
Yo, real talk: if you rap and you think you have good cadence and timing, listen to some Mavo, then have a seat...this guy shreds. He might not have a lot to say in my interview about behind the scenes stuff, but his lyrics and rhythmics hold up against the best in the game. I asked him a few basics and he hit me back with these:
When did you first start making music?
I started playing the drums when i was 9 and was in a band with my best friends. they played guitars, hip-hop came later.
What kept you doing it this whole time?
My friends passing really keeps my drive in tact, but its just something I’ve always wanted to do my whole life, I don’t know what else I'd do.
Do you think defining music into genres is important?
Not really.
Would you be able to name yours if they were?
mtphscs
Tell me the origin story of MTPHSCS, what does it mean to you?
Me and the original members are just really close internet friends and real life friends that just created they’re own language. mtphscs was created by me and dxct to bring together who we thought were the best producers and artists out making something special happen.
How do you select the instrumentals you use for your songs?
My friends send me stuff or I'll make something, (then) play different things til' I feel something happen in my head, then I know its the one.
What city are you in, what city are you from?
I’m in LA now, but I’m from Wichita, Kansas.
Your lyrics have a lot of soulful journalistic poet modes, did you study english/creative writing?
Yeah I was really into poetry in high school, and did creative writing honors english, and just read dictionaries all the time.
It's like you never take a breath in some of your verses, are you the "one take" type of artist, or is it just well calculated production?
No I definitely take my time and make sure it's how I want. If I get it in one take- cool, but I don’t care. I just try get what I want, then move on.
You recently were featured on TOXIC's "RED LIGHT" album, what was recording "Alexa" with Toxic like?
Fun, it's always good feeling to make bangers with cool people.
Did you enjoy working with RJMCKINNON on the "Silver Bullet" visual?
Special times, it was a movie... shit was fun lol
Any new visuals in the works?
Yes my debut video “Angls” is dropping in a week or so and I’m very excited. more videos after that too.
Where do you draw inspiration?
Friends and disconnecting from music, it helps recharge my brain then come back fresh.
This only scratches the surface, but can you talk about what it's like working with so many outrageously talented producers like ARTHUR, ALFON ZAABERG, CANSINO, STILL, REPTILIAN GOD MANA, SUNI VEGA, and KING YOSEF?
All I can really say is that its something I hold very close to my heart, because they’re all friends so it's just everything great you know. I love making music that means something.
When do you think the music started really taking off for yourself and friends?
Probably MKULTRA , but that was just a demo. It hasn’t even taken off yet to me.
What can we expect from Mavo in the future?
Something that will last forever.
Message to the fans?
I love you and I appreciate your help on this long journey, I can’t thank you all enough.
