CATXSCAN: Read This Right Meow

CATXSCAN is one of the most down to earth rappers I have ever interacted with. He stays true to his following, and has a massive amount of published music. His music is on a high level, both literally and in regard to his high level of positivity. Watch any of his music videos, and notice he gives a fearless smile throughout every line of each verse. If you've got the time, you will find all kinds of gems in the Portland based rapper's treasure trove of music online. Also, his live shows are completely insane, if you happen to be in the northwest...do not miss out on a chance to turn up with CATXSCAN.

What do you order when you get food, and where?
I’m not picky , I’ll eat pretty much eat everything. It’s where the name snackxscan comes from :)

Do you have a favorite pair of pants?
If I find jeans I really like i’ll get two just so I can wear them more.

Is there a story behind the show you played with Lil' Debbie? She's one of my personal favorite female rappers.
That show was INSANE ! We had been booked out in Walla Walla a couple times already, and were excited to come back. The promoter ended up being asleep and the whole show was running slow with multiple problems. If I remember right one of the openers didn't even get to perform and we ended performing AFTER Lil' Debbie! While we were performing Lil' Debbie tweeted that she fucked with our music. She was digging it so after we get off stage we go backstage to chill with her. Her security starts tripping cause he doesn't think we should be going back there, and a fight ended up breaking out. Lil' Debbie deleted her tweet and we never got a chance to make up. That venue in Walla Walla had some of the funnest shows I’ve ever played though. One time my bro got top in the middle of the crowd while the show was going down.

What was childhood like for you?
I was so blessed. My mom is a saint, and she works so hard to raise all of her children correctly. I’m the oldest of 5 but when I was growing up it was just my sister and I. I grew up in Cave Junction, Oregon which is so small most people in Oregon have never even heard of it. It’s a crazy place with no rules and it made me who i was today.

How did you get linked up with Ugly Gang?
I met them at a show I played with Slim Jesus the only time he ever came to Portland. It’s one of my favorite stories because during my set, one of the members of Ugly Gang was so bored that he went downstairs to tell Prince Hyph and the rest of gang there was some stupid white boy meowing on the stage and they should come upstairs to knock my ass out.  When they get upstairs I start performing my next song and Hyph holds everyone back to see what I was all about. During the song he asks his bro “ This is the kid you wanted to beat up?” “This kid is fucking tight, I want him in the camp” Instead of beefing the came on the stage and turned up with me. We talked after the set and the rest is history. They really treat me like family and I would do anything for them.

What was the first music you got into, how did it make you feel?
My dad had a friend that was playing music with HR the legendary punk vocalist of the Bad Brains which led my dad to become obsessed with the band. He had every cd they ever made and I remember the first time he was listening to one, it was the first time I thought music sounded cool. There was so much energy it was insane. I knew instantly I wanted to make music then.

When did you start making music, but more importantly, why?
In middle school a friend who had moved about an hour away gave me a call asking if I could be the singer in his band. I always wanted to be a singer, and I was honored he asked me. When I told him yes he let me know we had a show the next day and to get to his house asap. After that show my dreams of playing music for a living were even more solidified. Music is the only way I feel I can express myself and I’ve been creating it since I joined that band in 7th grade. I was in a couple different bands before I fully started pushing as CATXSCAN, and I can predict I will be in many more throughout life.

How would you compare yourself to other rappers in the northwest? Or would you even compare yourself at all?
I’ll leave all the comparisons for the fans. I don’t care about much I just make music I want to hear.

How do you feel about cops?
I think anyone that wants to enforce rules has problems, lol.

You have a lot of collectables and toys, but also guns and gear... how do these things tie into your career as a rapper?
Most of my interests are separate from my music. I have almost every smash bros amiibo but I wouldn’t wanna rap about that. I like talking about emotions or telling stories about trapping in my music. I want the two worlds to intertwine more but only when it feels natural.

Do you have a favorite album you've released so far?
My favorites are always changing. I love my music but I know I’m still progressing and when I listen to older songs I think about how much better music I will make in the future. I have so much unreleased stuff on the way too.

If you had to narrow down your discography to 3 albums to show a first time listener, which would you choose?
Guardian Angel
9 Lives
DHD

Any advice for people just getting started in the music business?
Define and set goals for yourself and go achieve them. Have fun and remember to be self aware. Be realistic about what is working for you and what isn't working for you. Don’t model your movements off what others do make your own lane. Look for opportunities others might not consider.

Why are you so positive all the time?Anything is possible and everything happens for a reason. Truly believing that makes it impossible not be positive.
